Why Prepare?

Hurricanes Helene and Milton brought heartbreak, property damage—and costly repairs. You can do simple checks today to help get ready. Simple, Common-Sense Check: Walk your roof (safely!) looking for loose shingles, rattling fascia or displaced flashings. Anything off is a sign it’s time for action.
DIY Roof Inspection Guide
Wear non-slip shoes and a sturdy ladder.
Make sure your footwear has good traction and fits snugly—loose shoes or slippery soles can cost you your balance. Position your ladder on firm, level ground and have someone steady it while you climb.
Scan every plane of your roof—listen for rattles, feel for loose pieces.
Walk slowly and methodically, paying attention to any sections that shift underfoot or sound hollow when tapped. A loose shingle or panel often precedes leaks, so note any areas that don’t sit flush.
Inspect soffits, gutters and penetrations (vents, skylights).
Gutters packed with debris can trap moisture against your fascia and lead to rot; clear them before you start. Check around vents, chimneys and skylights for gaps in flashing or sealant—those tiny openings let water sneak in.
Note any cracks, gaps or missing sealant.
Sealants deteriorate under sun and weather, so look for brittle, peeling or absent caulk around roof penetrations. Even a pencil-width crack can channel rainwater into your attic, so mark every flaw for repair.
